thanks Chris, yes, that is a difference between Vista and XP, in XP, Windows U brings Narrator up talking, but under Vista, Windowss U followed by alt N lands me on the button for Narrator, which needs to be clicked by the space bar, for those of us that didn't know this, it appears that Narrator wasn't available! -

No. When you boot up for the first time, a full copy of XP will be loaded, but it's just waiting for you to set it up etc. Now, because it's a full XP and not some kind of mini version, you can launch Narrator using just Windows u. Although this will also launch Utility Manager, you will at least get speech. Hope this helps.

OK Chris, this lands me on the Narrator button, so this has to be activated, Narrator doesn't just come up talking from those key strokes; this doesn't matter when JFW is loaded, but would do if there was not speech at all!
What you're not telling me is what happens under XP on a new machine, booted for the first time, if like Barbara says, there are some initial screens requiring input info, ahead of full boot up, then how can Narrator have been loaded?
It might just be me, but sometimes what you say is a bit vague, but I do appreciate that you are trying to help -

In Vista it launches Narrator, since Windows u actually brings up Ease of Access Centre not Utility Manager. Guess Microsoft wanted consistency though and Windows e is already taken up.

Andy, you should be able to use Narrator from the word go. As soon as you hear sound or music, press Windows u, and Narrator will load.

Firstly, many thanks to all that help me understand about netbooks, and enabled me to make my choice of the Asus 901.
This machine comes preloaded with XP, is it possible to get started on this machine without sighted help? Can anybody tell me which screens come up first, and how to get past them to the point where I can make use of Narrator?
