[access-uk] GIF attatchments opening in notepad within Outlook Express

OK, so I know by the nature of this question it won't be of much interest to 
many on this list, but I'll pose the question anyway.

I've been sent some .GIF files as attachments but when I open them in Outlook 
Express they're opened in Notepad.  Why on earth is this happening?

I've saved the pictures and opened them from within the saved location and they 
open in MS Paint.  So, why aren't they doing that from within Outlook Express?  
Certainly would like to know the answer to this mystery.
