She usually knows what she's talking about so I suggest you try her free

called
Free Rip and can be found at downloads.com

A friend who's not on this list is trying to convert from WMA to MP3

Goldwave. When she has done it the sound is very distorted and, in her
words, sounds as if it's under water.
Another friend wonders if the quality of conversion is deliberately low
