fine but we need to stand back from this a little.
From bitter experience I know how poor the system of just signing when you
withdraw cash is. It can easily lead to fraud as it is up to the shop or
outllet selling goods to check that the signature is the same as the one on
the card. The signature on the card can easily wear away so, looking at
things from a selfish perspective I find that chip and pin is better. I
have never had a problem whith a chip and pin machine, and I would go as far
as to say that no person with significant visual impairment who does not
appear to be in any way dyslexic and who is able boddied physically should
have any difficulty with chip and pin machines once shown how to use them.
I do accept that Chip and Pin can cause a problem for people with limited
dexterity but so could having to grip a pen and sign. I also accept that
people with some kinds of dyslexia may also have difficulty as often in the
diagnostic tests for people with dyslexia people are found to have
signiffican difficulties remembering strings of numbers.
So, the Chip and Pin system is not perfect. we must strive to find
inclusive chip and pin alternatives that include all users of credit and
debit cards without compromising security too much and that is an ongoing
battle.
Before considering supporting any legal action of this kind, I would
therefore like to know what alternatives the DRC and others have in mind?
If they have none, they should shut up until they do. If they have an
alternative, I would certainly like to read this as inclusivity is clearly
very important here.

Subject: Disabled People and Chip and Pin
The TUC has been supporting the Disability Rights Commission in its work to
prevent discrimination against disabled people - especially learning
disabled people - through the adoption of chip and pin technology. Having
failed to make real progress in discussion with the banks etc, the DRC is
now considering legal action if suitable cases can be identified.
They have asked the TUC for help in identifying individuals who may have
suffered discrimination through the failure of suppliers to accept
alternatives to Chip and Pin.
They ask anyone with a possible case to first contact the DRC Helpline,
08457 622633 (textphone 08457 622644, fax 08457 778878) - helpline advisers
will discuss the case with the caller and if appropriate pass it on to the
legal team.
Please can you circulate this information through any networks and encourage
anyone - especially a learning disabled member - with a possible case, to
contact the DRC helpline.
Thanks,
