I believe it's a simple rights issue. Radio Five Live don't have the
rights to broadcast certain sporting events to the entire world. So on
their internet feed they put out a message saying that the broadcasts
will cease for a while. It happens on Radio 5 Live and Radio 5 Live
Sports Extra. I suspect you'd find something similar on the internet
feeds for Radio 1, Radio 2 and Radio 3 if they are broadcasting live
concerts that they only have UK rights for.

I don't believe they're attempting to apply geolocking to stop certain
parts of the world listening to it. I think it's blanket and even those
in the UK are stopped from listening because, in theory, they can just
switch on the radio and hear it there instead.

If the server used is not in this country, then the overseas rules will
apply and so we in Britain will not get these broadcasts where these
rights issues apply.

Hi Iain

What happens is that when you get to the kick-off point in a football
match
or the start of a tennis match, Five Live come in with this message that
says something along the lines of: "Sorry, but this part of the
programme is
unable to be broadcast due to restriction rights. We will now return
you to
Sports Week with Gary Richardson", or something like that. So it seems
to
me that Five Live are broadcasting this. Sadly it happens often, and
until
I discovered the iPod works differently, I would have assumed it would
do
likewise. I will contact Luke Williams at Wireless For The Blind and
take
it up with him as I don't understand it myself. It only seems to occur
on
Five Live or its sister station, Sports Extra. I am not aware of it
occurring on other stations, so it just makes me feel it isn't something
BWBF will be unable to resolve, but you never know.

I wonder if the Wireless for the blind people are aware of this anomaly.
It
seems to me that many of their potential Sonata customers would want
access
to the kind of material to which access is not allowed.

Hi John

I doubt there is anything Wireless For The Blind can do about the
blocking
of certain content as it comes down to streaming rights. I was all set
to
listen to the match this morning when it suddenly went off. So I got
out my
iPod Touch and went straight to my favourites list in the radio app, and
hey
presto! I don't know what difference this is to listening to it on the
Sonata in respect of the way it works, but someone else may know the
answer
to that.

I could spend a lot of time browsing the App Store in the iPod Touch and
would love to get lots of different programs. When they are practically
free, it's ok to risk it, but I would want a bit more recommendation of
the
more expensive purchases before going ahead.

While you are listening to say birdsong or a radio programme, VoiceOver
also
gives you other info like the DJ, song, name of bird, family from which
it
comes ... It's amazing.

If anyone knows of other useful apps, please share them as I will do if
I
find any that work with VoiceOver and may be of use.

hi jackie this is one of my great anoying things about the sonata you
cannot
get the sport on it. my friend and i are in touch with the wireless for
the
blind to see if anything can be done about it. it is a real shame the
i-phone does not run flash as i could get the sheffield wednesday
commentary
from where i get it on the pc but you have to give apple great
congratulations on voice over and because it is a main stream device
things
are so so much cheaper the aps for example when you look at the new
braille
sense on hand which is small braille and really very good if you then
connect a braille device to the i-phone you vitually have the same for
so so
much cheaper. will be glad when the kindle app will become accessible on
the
i-phone though it may take some time.

0 My Apple keyboard arrived yesterday, and pairing it with my iPod Touch
was
0 extremely straightforward. So I decided to visit the App Store and,
for
59p 0 each, I bought four applications that work with VoiceOver. They
are
the 0 World Fact Book 2011, a dictionary and thesaurus, Tune In Radio
and, 0
probably my favourite, Birds of Britain. The latter is an amazing
little 0
program if you love bird sound and details. Not only can you play the
song,
0 but you can listen to VoiceOver provide a description of their size,
colour, 0 family, time of year etc. There is also a favourites button
to
use where 0 you can add a library of your favourite birds to it.
0
0 Tune In Radio is great. Similarly, there is a bookmark facility where
you
0 can make a list of the stations you wish to add. Because I love
tennis,
and 0 the Australian Open is on at the moment, I have great difficulty
getting it 0 on DAB as we have such a diabolical signal in these parts.
So
when I tuned 0 in using the Sonata at 8,00 this morning, a message said
that
restricted 0 rights prevented coverage. I find this often happens at
weekends when 0 football matches are in progress too. So I tuned my
iPod to
Sports Extra 0 and, low and behold, got the tennis on live.
0
0 All the above apps work with VoiceOver. I don't use my keyboard for 0
everything, mainly when I get into tricky areas that need a bit of
typing.
0 Mostly, I use my fingers and have got used to doing so now.
0
0 Just thought I'd pass on the info.
