Sandra,
The position as I understand it is that the XP firewall only monitors 
incoming traffic.  Sygate (and other firewalls)are bi-directional.  For that 
reason I use the free Sygate in addition to the XP firewall.  It is easy to 
configure and I have had no conflicts between it and the XP one.

Interesting that you are considering NOD32.  The only thing stopping 
me switching to it is the prospect of getting Norton completely off the 
system.  I tried NOD32 on a spare machine for 30 days and was very 
impressed.
