In this case, what you have had to do is perform the "Sledge Hammer"
approach.
Basically some of the Registry entries appear to the regular updater
to have become corrupt. The solution - well, you just don't want to
know.
Microsoft realise this, and so have put up what they call a "Direct
Download/Link" which addresses the problem more aggressively.
It is clearly a nasty problem because in the Knowledge Base article,
they quote a North American telephone number, or advise international
users to contact their local Microsoft Support Office.

Answering my own query - well kind of - I've done it thanks to the
info
given here, so much appreciated for that. I don't understand why it
wouldn't update automatically, but it seems to have done it and
disappeared
from the failed updates. I prefer, wherever possible, to have the
machines
updated from the Windows Update site.

Guys,
The number is KB2289187, and it's the only one there. So I did as
Iain
suggested and downloaded it from Microsoft directly, and it is
supposed to
be running it, so we'll see.
I now understand what the fix is for, but why it just wouldn't install
it.
There is also one there for PowerPoint, but that particular update
doesn't
keep coming up, only the one for Office itself. Nevertheless, I
decided to
run it too, but it gave me a message after accepting the licence
agreement
that Office Hot Fixer is still running, so to wait until it has
finished
before installing the second update. Not sure what any of this means,
but
there it is.

If you do a manual Windows Update, it should tell you that there is
one
important update. There's a link to more details which tells you what
the
update is for, and this will usually give you the number.
Alternatively, you may find there's a link to failed updates, and
again it
usually gives you all we need to know.

George, sorry, you've lost me. Where would I find the update number?
I've
never encountered any update issues before, so please forgive me for
being
rather senior about this. I simply install all the updates, and it
generally happens, except with this one relating to MS Office which I
think
was issued on 9 November.

Apologies for cross-posting this, but wonder if one of you more
knowledgeable people could suggest a solution for the following
problem I am

Whenever I have updates to install on my Windows 7 Home Premium
laptop,
every one of them installs except one which keeps telling me to try
again,
and gives me the following error code: Code 80070663. It appears to
relate
to an Office 2003 patch, but no matter how many times I try installing
this
update, I am sent round in a circle.
Does anyone know how I can install it, and what it is actually meant
to do?
Presumably it is something to prevent malicious code or a security
vulnerability patch, but I'm beat with trying to get this in. I have
no
such problems on my Windows Vista laptop or my XP Netbook, and have
all
three machines set to take every update automatically.
