I'm with Tiscali and didn't get any intrusive software with my installation.
Just a modem driver. I think I've had an email from them offering an
anti-spam but I just deleted the email.

Hi,
I would stick away from BT Broadband, Tiscalli and Wanadoo for this
reason, as well as the obvious AOL.
If you have your own ADSL equipment (such as a router), however, then no
software CD is required at all, as you just give the router the details
and it manages the connection.
The other ISPs who provide a USB model will give you software, but just
for the DSL modem (i.e, Plusnet do this).
Andrew.

From recent messages on the list (including one yesterday, which I
accidentally deleted!), I have got the impression that some ISPs
provide CDs which install antivirus, anti spyware etc. software in
addition to what is needed to access their service. I think that BT
Yahoo was mentioned.
I intend in the near future to switch to Broadband and a new ISP, but
want to choose my own defences - and particularly to remain a
"Symantec free zone".
I would appreciate any advice on ISPs who make such a requirement
difficult if not impossible.
