Thanks George; do these external hard drives work off their own power
supply? I've read that some are very noisy, so am interested in anybody
suggesting recommendations.
Thanks -
Andy

A USB Hub, is rather like one of those 13 amp power strips.

It allows a single USB port to become 2, 3, 4 or more USB
ports.

Wondering what is the difference between "in the hub" and
"it's own socket?"

I love my external drive, couldn't tell you what type it is.

One thing i noticed though, when my computer guy helped me
move the computer
when we got the new computer desk, he put the drive in the
hub and it didn't
like it as i copy a lot of mp3's etc, it seems better now
its in its own
socket again, still fiddling with it to be sure though.

These external drives are very useful!
Amazon have then for around =A360 too and with their free
delivery this makes
them attractive.

I've just seen the Freecom External eSATA Hard Drive Pro and
their transfer
speed is exceptional. They're somewhat more expensive but
if speed is of
the essence then they're well worth a look.

Are these external USB hard drives just plug and go? They
sound great for
back-up.

Hi Harry - no idea:
Either I have dyslexic fingers today or I have some spurious
outlook =3D
setting which has strangely encoded some symbols in my post.
What I meant to say was I had seen a 250 gig harddrive on
misco for a =3D
bargain price of =3DA360 (sixty pounds). External drives do
seem to be =3D
getting cheaper very quickly.

Co-incidently some great deals around on external drives at
present, =3D3D
spotted a 250 gig one on misco for =3D3DA360 yesterday.

It is more a question you want it to do. If you just have
the one PC =3D
=3D3D
then a cheap USB hard drive will be sufficient. If for
example you have =3D
=3D3D
a number of PCs and a router to connect it to with a free
ethernet port, =3D
=3D3D
and want to have your files available throughout your home
network then =3D
=3D3D
the one with ethernet that describes itself as network
attached storage =3D
=3D3D
may be the thing you want. In theory you could connect it
directly to a =3D
=3D3D
PC with a network port using a corssover cable but I
wouldn't advise it. =3D
=3D3D
USB and firewire are better for direct PC connection.

KHi all, please can anyone tell me what the best external
hard drive =3D
=3D3D
is for
me to use with my laptop? There's one which plugs into
the router and =3D
=3D3D
one
that just goes into your computer, right? So anyone know
which is the
better and if I went for the router one can you use it
directly into =3D
=3D3D
the
  computer or is it restricted?

Maybe someone will tell me something else is easier for VI
people to =3D
=3D3D
use
than an external hard drive? Thanks and
