yes, the S.B. audigy give you access at the front, my audigy 2 does. It's very convenient. The only trouble with audigy is that the nice features that come with the card are not easily accessible by screenreaders. So, if you haven't got sighted help easily available that might not be the best choice for you.

All the best,
and good luck in your search...

Carol, I cannot be of tremendous help here, and maybe Tristram will be along
before the day's out. Anyway, when you speak of access via the front of the
Pc, well, yes, that's very convenient and that's accomplished sometimes by a
break-out box sized to fit a drive bay at the front. I think, but am not
certain, that the SB Audigy's take this approach and when there's enough
drive bay space it works quite nicely.

Other than that, manufacturers of audio orientated PCs often just have a
panel with leads extending back to the rear of the machine to facilitate
more convenient plugging via a front patchbay. The only cards I've seen
much of at the cheaper end are the M=-Audio ones but I'm not sure if
M-Audio - or whatever they might be called now - do a card that's
particularly suited to what you appear to be after.

I'll email you off-list if I come across anything that looks like what you
are after.

Hi all,

Although I realise there are perhaps more appropriate lists for such
questions, I have already tried and have had very little response. Seeing a
reference in another post to EMU sound cards on this list, I started to
troll the Internet but, as always, got rather tired . . .. Hope you'll
therefore be able to respond to this one.

I'm looking for a better quality (not necessarily top range) sound card,
preferably that has ins and outs on the front of the computer. In addition,
I need something operating completely independently from the AC97 so as to
avoid any possible hitches in having two sound cards running on this
computer.

Any suggestions most welcome, then I can limit the amount of searching
through reviews that I need to do.

Thanks.
