Hi Tony,
Well, you still can use a lot of the desktop commands with the laptop
layout. The main differences in the laptop layout are the Jaws key plus
number 8 and 9 on the numbers row simulating the mouse clicks and using some
of the letters with the Jaws key instead of the num pad. So yes, you will
still be using many of the desktop commands with a laptop such as Jaws key
plus the function keys, the numbers row, the arrows, home, end, page up/down
etc. So don't worry, it's not much of a learning curve.
And ah, you can use the keyboard help mode (Jaws plus number 1) to
familiarise yourself with the new key commands.
Yeah, I find the caps lock key to be a lot more convenient to use. I'm not
even sure why Jaws have laptop and desktop keyboard layouts. Unless I'm
missing something, with the laptop layout one has both functionalities of
the desktop layout as well as the laptop layout compiled. That's why I use
the laptop layout all the time.
HTH,
Amro

Amro,
The thought did strike me alright earlier that the capslock key as a Jaws
key seems easier to access!
Do you know if you can retain any of the desktop keystrokes or must one
learn all those new ones?
Thanks
Tony

Tony, best to refer to Keystrokes/Laptop Jaws Keystrokes in the Jaws help
files. You'll find a table of all the commands you need there plus other
useful info. I personally prefer using the Caps Lock key as the Jaws key
that I use Laptop Keyboard Layout even when using a desktop.
Cheers,
Amro

The JAWS key in laptop layout is caps locked. You can change the layout
through the basic settings dialogue box, accessed from the options menu
in JAWS itself.

Subject: [access-uk] Desktop to Laptop Keyboard
Hi All,
I have never really worked a laptop keyboard layout and am wondering
for any tips you might have to give?
I am using Jaws and the laptop is Vostro.
It is a standard laptop keyboard I reckon!
I previously only used the querty keyboard even connected to a laptop
but as I now need to move my laptop about a bit I thought that I
should now get useed to the laptop keyboard layout!
I note that there isn't an insert/Jaws key as I knew it on the
desktop keyboard?
What for example is the Jaws key on a laptop!
Do I need to change the keyboard layout for Jaws and if so how do I do
this?
Getting used to the laptop keys will save me a lot of unnecessary
carrying around of an additional keyboard in the future!!
Any assist with these queries gratefully appreciated.
Tony
