that you say about the 26 items is not true in windows xp.  if you go to 
control panel, taskbar and start menu options and go to the start menu tab 
there is a group of settings that you get to by clicking the Customise 
button.  thaere is a treeview called advanced options. at the bottom of this 
is an option called use personalised menus this should be off.

easy. simply right-click on the item you want deleting. Choose delete from
the menu. And it's gone.
