Hi Caroline, It may take a little while to identify the add-on that is causing the problem as you will need to turn them on one by one until the problem occurs. So, if you are willing to take the time: 1. Open IE normally; 2. Open the 'tools' menu and move down to the 'manage add-ons' and press enter; In the dialog box that opens it will default to the 'toolbars and extension' section, so tab once to the next focus which should say 'currently loaded add-ons', 'run without permission' and 'downloaded controls'. Highlight the 'currently loaded add-ons'; 4. tab once to the next section which is a list of loaded add-ons and each of them should say 'enabled'. You will need to turn each off in turn to find the right one I am afraid. If any are java, then I would tend to leave these enabled; 5. Tab three times until you get to the 'disable' button and hit enter on that; 6. Tab three more times to the 'close' button. The process for turning on the add-on is the same as above, but instead of a 'disable' button in step 6, it will be an 'enable' button. You may have to do the above for the other 2 sections, i.e. 'run without permission' and 'downloaded controls', but hopefully you will have found the one that is causing the problem before that. DEP is designed to protect your system, so turning it off isn't such a good idea. The best way to solve such issues is to identify the rogue add-on, but first, let's see if the problem occurs when no add-ons are enabled. You can start IE with no add-ons by: 1 Press the 'windows key' and go to 'all programs'; 2. Go to 'accessories' and open the folder; 3. Scroll down to 'system tools' and open that folder; 4. Scroll down to 'Internet Explorer (no add-ons) and press the 'enter' key. IE should work just as before, but without add-ons. Use it in this mode until you are sure that the problem has not occurred again - I don't know how long it takes for the DEP error to pop up, but try it for as long as it takes. If it doesn't occur in this mode, then it is probably an add-on that is causing the problem. Try this first and, if the problem is resolved, then we can start a process of disabling each add-on in turn until the rogue add-on is identified. Recently I have started to receive a message while browsing that a data execution prevention error has occurred and IE has had to close to protect my computer. If I re-open the browser, it continues to work properly for a while and then the same message could appear again. It can occur on any page, sometimes when I'm on Amazon, eBay or other similar sites which I wouldn't expect to cause any problems. I have googled the problem and have found a solution, but I'd like to know whether it's advisable to follow the recommendation or if I could be opening up my PC to trouble. What has been suggested on several sites is to enter the following into a command prompt running as administrator: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff I have already verified that DEP is set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only". If the suggestion isn't recommended, please could anyone give an alternative I could try. This laptop is four years old and has only been coming up with this problem for the last couple of months.
