There is an easier way to destroy all date on a hard drive.
Put the drive into the freezer for a while and power it up.  The heads will 
hit the disc's surface making all data unrecoverable.

I know it works, I've tried it!

Ian,

I once heard that the FBI dealt with their HD's by removing them, drilling
them with a number of well positioned holes, and then pumping them with
super glue.

Not sure how that would help you, but the problem with confidential
information on HD's is very real
