Ah, John, just seen this message which makes a lot of sense. Yes, I have been entering text into that box because I thought that's where it had to go. I'll give your suggestion a try and see how it works. Many thanks indeed. You say that you enter the text for the footnote in an edit box? I assume this is in the dialog box which opens after you have gone through the 'insert menu and then 'reference' and 'footnote'? Try the following: 1. Do as you have been doing to open the footnote dialog box; 2. Check that all the elements are correct, i.e. numbering and 'continuous', but do not enter any text in the edit box - this apparently is for 'custom marks' t - whatever that might be; 3. Click the 'insert' button; 4. The footnote number will appear in the body of the text and a 'footnote pane' will open with the footnote number inserted. Type your footnote text in the 'footnote pane' following the number. Hopefully this will remove the text from your document and just leave it in the 'footnote pane'. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you - seemed OK when I did it in 2003. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium, JAWS 13, Microsoft Office Pro 2003, and have an idea, but am not sure if what I've done is right. I have gone into the Insert menu, down to Referencing which has a sub-menu, and entered on Footnotes. I have then chosen the footnote to be at the end of the page, and kept the numbering as I would want it. But the bit that confuses me is that I have been told to put the name of the book, author, place of publisher and name of publisher in each footnote at the end of the passage I have quoted. But it doesn't seem to come out right if I do that, so I'm obviously not understanding, or doing something completely batty. How do I do it so that I just get the number at the end of the piece I have quoted please, but so that it shows up as a footnote? Oh gosh I do hope this makes sense to you literary people out there, (smiles). Your humble friend!
