Hi Andy,

I'm writing privately as we may get weighed down a bit here and we might need to discuss it further. You can always call me. 0118 3765358.

(I'm around tonight and tomorrow evening, but not during the day tomorrow.)

OK, Andy, just use the Windows Volume control. If you don't find it in your Systray you should find it under Accessories, entertainment, volume control.

Open the volume control and work your way round with the tab. (This is the playback volume by the way). You should have everything not checked (so not muted) apart from your microphone which should be muted. Failure to do this will result in loud squealing sounds coming through your speakers/headphones when you plug in a mic.

Now go to Properties with Alt+P. Work your way around (again with tab) until you reach "Adjust volume for . . ." This will probably read Playback, but you want to arrow down to "Recording".

Tab again and you'll have listed those things which you want to see. They'll be checked. Make sure your microphone is checked in that list, or you won't see it to alter the settings.

Once you hit OK, you can then work round to the microphone volume. Sometimes - and pretty often - the setting should not be "high" as in 90 whatever but lower, as in "10 percent". It's some peculiarity with which is "high" and which is "low" I think and these often go the opposite way to the way you think they should. I have mine currently at 8 percent.

That's a bit rough, because these controls are better understood as you work through them and the best I can do currently in my head, but see if this helps you.

Contact me again privately if you wish more help. I'll give what I can - of course.

Subject: [access-uk] Connecting a Mic

Hi all - I'm trying to get to grips with Skype, but so far, can't seem to
get a mic connected.

I'm using the ac97 Realtech sound card, I have the Mic and speakers plugged in separately; nothing is muted in volume, and all volumes are up high. When
I run the check hardware wizard from within volume, and it gets to the
screen to test the Mic, although I can hear it back in my headphones, the
wizard said it was unable to hear my voice, telling me that I'd be able to
hear others through my speakers or headphones, but they wouldn't be able to
hear me!

What do I need to do? Oh yes! I clicked on my sound card from with in
options on the tools menu of Skype as well.

- Andy
