[access-uk] Computer networking: some pointers wanted

Hi, and this is, strictly speaking, not an access issue, so replies
off-list are welcome if that's felt more appropriate.
Basically, I'm networking two PCs running XP Pro (service pack 2, with
updates)via a Netgear router-adsl modem. I'm running up against not
being able to send files across the network, but I can read the
folders I've decided to share. This is a complex issue as it involves
admin rights and, under XP Pro, standard file sharing allowing of more
flexibility and security, not to mention NTFS issues.
What I'm after are pointers to internet resources such as step-by step
guides and maybe some useful utilities for trouble shooting or helping
out.
AS I say, if the mods or anyone feels this is better discussed
