I feel exactly the same.

Alot of time when it comes to television and media like it such as DVD/VHS I genuinly don't get bent out of shape.

But the blazay responses have really got me. Especially from a company who it's the law to fund! Or at least help with!

We appreciate it, Ian.

All we want is to see that programme with some speech over . . ..

I don't want to settle until I get that, even if they have to do it now
for a group of us!

Hi Carol,

The response you received is completely inadequate and totally
inappropriate in terms of its content and its language. I'm pleased to
note it came from en employee of capita and not someone from the Beeb
directly. However, since they represent BBC views, you can be certain
my dander is now up and I'll be pursuing this relentlessly. I'll keep
the list posted as to what happens.

Cheers now.

Ian

Yep, I got one today and was just sorting it out to send when I saw your message.

I'm not too pleased either because it seems there's just no way for us
to see that programme now. As it was on at a special time, it's
probably not going to be repeated and, even if it is, we won't
necessarily have anyone to read for us at that time.

What does anyone think about this idea about the DVD's? That's not
going to solve our problem either is it, even if we did find a
reasonably accessible DVD player!

Anyway, here's the response I received.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding 'Children of Beslan'.

I note that you were unhappy there was no form of translation of the
children's speech other than a written wording onscreen, thus preventing
those who suffer from blindness or other disabilities to follow what was
being said.

Please be assured that your comments on this matter, along with your
concern that you did not receive a response as stated when you initially
phoned BBC Information, will be fully registered and made available to
programme makers and indeed senior management within the BBC. Feedback
of this nature helps us when making decisions about future BBC
programmes and services and your views will most certainly play a part
in this process.

In relation to your other requests, transcripts of the programme cannot
be provided and as copies of this programme are not commercially
available, for copyright and contractual reasons we are unable to supply
a one-off copy.  Our copyright agreements only allow broadcasts;
duplication and distribution of programme tapes has to be negotiated as
a separate commercial agreement.

However, if you would like to make a suggestion for the programme to be
released on DVD, can I advise that you put it in writing to the
Commissioning Editor of BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC,

Hmm, it seems BBC Information have no real influence here.

This is my response that I got today. It looks very much like a form
letter
with a bit thrown into it.

"Dear Mr Toner,

Thank you for contacting BBC Information regarding your concerns about
Children of Beslan which was broadcast on BBC TWO on 30 August 2005. I
was sorry to learn of your disappointment in not being able to watch the
programme.

I understand you received a copy of my correspondence sent to another
individual regarding this matter. I note you concerns and I have raised
this matter with Fiona Stourton again. However, she has nothing further
to add to the response you have already received.

Thank you once again for contacting BBC Information.

Yours sincerely

Crispian Cousins"

Aint it grand?

Carol did you ever get a response?

Hi Mel,

Good on yer for doing this. You now have a couple of options open to
you. You can write again direct to the person from BBC Information
who responded to your complaint saying that you're dissatisfied and
giving your reasons why. You may then want to wait for a further
response from them or you might want to say that you wish to escalate
the complaint to a higher level. If you do that you then ought to be
advised to contact the Editorial complaints Unit which is the point of

appeal for dissatisfied complainants. Option two is to complain
direct to the Exec {Producer Fiona Stourton again giving your reasons
for your dissatisfaction with her response as represented to you by
BBC Information. The third option is to go directly to the next stage
by writing to Fraser Steel, Head of Editorial complaints, MC4 C6, BBC
Media Centre, Media Village, London W12 7TQ, reiterating your
complaint and saying that you find the BBC Information response
completely unsatisfactory and that you wish to take your complaint
further. If you then find the response to that appeal unsatisfactory,

your next stage is to take the matter on appeal to the BBC Governors
and we'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it.

Hope this is helpful.

Ian

Hi All,

Following the discussion on this list about the Children of Beslan
programme on BBC 2, I wrote and registered a complaint with the BBC.
Below is my response.

To me, the response is far from satisfactory. It is, in my opinion,
like saying that a building can't be made accessible to a wheelchair
user because the steps leading up to the entrance are aesthetically
pleasing and a ramp would look out of place.

*** Text Begins ***

Dear Ms Spooner,

Thank you for contacting BBC Information regarding your concerns about

Children of Beslan which was broadcast on BBC TWO on 30 August 2005. I

was sorry to learn of your disappointment in not being able to watch

the programme

I have raised your concerns with Fiona Stourton, Executive Producer
for Children of Beslan.

She explained that the decision to subtitle was made by the production

team in consultation with the Controller of BBC TWO. The decision was
made, after much debate, because it was felt that the children's
voices should be heard. Their feelings were expressed as much in the
voices as the words. While we regret that for the visually impaired
this was a disappointment, we felt that to use actors for children who

had been through such trauma would have been inappropriate.

I realise that you may still feel strongly about this matter but hope
the explanation behind this decision is useful. Please be assured
that your comments on this matter have been registered and added to a
daily log that is made available to senior editorial staff and
programme makers. Once again, thank you for taking the time to contact

us with the strength of your concerns.

Yours sincerely
