[access-uk] Re: Camera Imaging Devices was RE: Re: kurzweil 1000

i think the pearl will only work with open book by design! yes the camera speck seems poor compared to general availability! that's why i wouldn't consider it at this stage!

Hi List

Well this could become very interesting.

As Open Book are now about to sell the Pearl it probably means that Kurzweil
will probably do the same sort of thing.

So could it now be a case of the VI industry using cameras to take images is
it not likely that the "normal" folks, like Nuance and Abby etc. might try
and use the same technology as it is obviously much faster and more
accurate?

I always say "never buy the first of anything" because doubtless, like the
iPhone 4, there are always problems with the first one and specifications
become better after all the bugs have been found.

I was impressed when I saw the Pearl at Sight Village in Birmingham, but
thought as per usual "these guys are taking us for a ride" a camera doesn't
cost £700 as you can buy a decent 12mb camera for around a £100. The camera
on the Pearl is only 5mp and images are at 200 dpi which is lower than most
items are scanned

And mobile phones have been made with a 8 MP camera (the N86) which you can
buy for around £350 and put BeyoCBS on to it for £70. Ok the application for
BeyoCBS and Pearl are completely difference, though the Pearl can be used
anywhere even on a netbook you don't really want to get your netbook out at
a station and such cut cameras cost around the same sort of price, I suspect
this is the VI price exaggerations that make us pay so much money.

Ok these are just my thoughts and wondered if anyone thinks the way I am
thinking too?

Hi all,
I plan to get Kurzweil 1000 as soon as I have a compatible scanner. This
is so I can read my own posts. I tried OpenBook but Kurzweil beats it by
miles. Version 9 of OpenBook will be interesting though and I plan to
install and run it in its 40 minute mode.
Just my £0.02 worth.

Will,

I am a Kw user and know nothing of Openbook. I would recommend Kurzweil
for
ease of use, and it has rarely caused me problems. One point worthy of
consideration is that with KW you can upgrade from an old version to the
latest one, without paying for any versions you may have missed. I do
not
know whether this is the same with Openbook. Also, the KW license allows
you to use it on any machine, as long as you are the sole user.

It is probably also worth considering that Openbook will soon be paired
with
the new Pearl camera technology if that is what you wish to use.

I am just putting these points forward as things you might wish to
consider.
I do not have many answers, but am just posing a few questions which
others
may wish to comment on.

Hi Will

To me, personally, they are much of a muchness in terms of features.
Open
Book supports Braille without needing to have JAWS running in the
background, whereas K1000 doesn't. K1000 isn't copy protected in the way
that Open Book version 9 will be either, but it costs £100 more at the
moment.

I use both of them. What I can't get out of one, I generally can with
the
other.

Kind Regards,

hi all, how does k1000 compare to openbook?
It seems that k1000 has a lot more online based and daisy features or
does
openbook have all this as well?
