Ah, Mel, TV producers and their egos rarely make such common sense
distinctions.

And, was it supposed to be an artistic programme or a factual
documentary?

Mel

P.S. Just on my way to the BC's complaints site as Damon suggested. If
everyone from this list does the same, surely they'd have to listen?

I'd understand if it was opera but I can't see how a voice over could
spoil
the artistic integrity of this sort of programme. If the translation
was
done by a Russian speaking English, that would have kept the emotive
feeling. Has anyone else got an argument against this artistic
integrity
explanation?

Can I urge anyone who was annoyed by this to make a complaint via the
BBC complaints website www.bbc.co.uk/complaints

You are guaranteed a response within 10 days.

The more people who do it, the more likelyhood a result.

BBC execs believe that adding voiceovers interupts the artistic
integrity of the programme.

Thanks, Barry. I'll keep it and pass on in due course - when I hear
back from them, or within a few weeks if I don't.

Not giving a verbal translation does not only alienate the VI, it would
also have put off many others. My parent's, who have no sight problems,
are not fast readers so turned the TV over when they saw the sub-titled
translations. I listened to a programme about Beslan on the World
Service a couple of months ago. They were interviewing the teachers.
The teacher started talking in Russian and, after a few seconds, an
English translation was given over the top. If the BBC can do it on
Radio, surely they can do it on TV too.

Is *Points of view* still running on the BBC? It is obviously too late
for this programme, but they need to sort this out for future viewing,
particularly for something as emotive as Beslan.
