Yeah, I definitely need an install. Don't have that option right now though.

No it is not just us. I have a very good sighted friend who is very
up on computers, and he says that Windows absolutely needs a
reinstall after a year, to keep it ticking at any sensible pace, and
I tend to agree with him. It is a hassle, but if you keep your data
on a separate drive or partition, move my documents for example, you
can easily reinstall, if you have all your software to hand.

I have an unattended install, but my friend Chris, the same chap we
are talking of, created it for me.

Hi Steve,

I usually go about a year, or a bit longer, but this past install may
have gone two years and is now pretty ropey! I just need some sight
to go through it all over again and don't fancy that one.

Do you think sighted people go through the same saga of install, or
do you think it's mainly because we use speech software and/or can't
always shut down properly, or crash for no other reason that we can
find, apart from the

speech maybe? Just interested on your thoughts here.

Hi Doris,

I tend to reinstall Windows at least once a yhear, as I find I get
better performance out of it. It becomes kind of like swimming
through treacle if you don't, even with the best repair utils in the
world. But that's just personal preference on my part, but I don't
believe a Windows install stays good for much more than a year.

Hi, Steve,

Reinstalling widnows just to fix a sapi error is a bit extreme in my
book. ii used to reformat and reinstall all the time when I had sight
still. I know how to do an unintended install but have not done it. I
have been running on the same install of windows for the past 2 1/2
years here and I try to keep my system in top shape as much as I can.

tonight I finally fixed that speech applet error message by
reinstalling the speech component of Microsoft office xp that I have
on my system and all is well. ,g>

I like to tinker around a lot and play with voices and such and
every once in a while something breaks. ,g>

thanks for the feedback to you and everyone on here. It's cool to be

Hi, Barry, hi, listers!

I have a bit of good news on this one at last.

This morning I tried accessing the Microsoft hotfix request page for
this fix in Firefox rather than in Internet Explorer and I tried
using the Webvision plugin capture solving gizmo on the visual
verification and it worked! It told me it had submitted it and then
a couple three seconds later I was told the resolved capture had
been added to my clipboard and was ready to paste into the
appropriate edit box. It was so smooth! This was the first time
this capture resolving thing had actually worked for me but I was
thrilled!,g>

I then received the hotfix by email in a password protected
self-extracting archive that needs to be downloaded and extracted
within a week after requesting it. I did this and tried to apply the
hotfix only to be told that there was no need for me to install the
hotfix as my service pack (sp3) was newer than the fix. so I still
have the problem but at least was able to request thehotfix all by
myself. ,g>

I'll fiddle around with this some more and report back with you guys
if I do get the problem fixed.

I had deleted all those user lexicon files and stuff befoer btw.

Thanks much and God Bless,

Doris

Hi Doris,

Yeah I got hit with that CAPTCHA as well. The Irony that it was on
a hot fix for TTS corruption was not lost on me and a few choice
words where throan about the office. hahaha

I hope you can get this sorted, I also saw and tryed the deleting
of the files in

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Speech\Files\MSASR

Which did nothing. The only thing that did work was the reinstall
for me.

Hi,Steve,

Yeah, I know and I have instructions I saved on how to do this
including deletion of corrupted files. However, it has not done
the trick this time on my box. Maybe I have to have a look-see in
the registry and see what I can monkey around with in there. I
had to delete some ghost voices manually out of their sometime
back.

There actually is a Microsoft Hotfix for this problem but it is
one that is mailed out on request only and I only got asfar as the
visual verification page for it. I do not know if the hotfix was
included in sp3 or not.

thanks much.

actually deleted the potentially corrupted files befoer
reinstalling sapi 5 but i still get this error mesage:

begin quote

Speech Properties
The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary
engine could not be created. Please select a
different engine and/or a different audio device.
OK

end quote

If you install the sapi5.inf as I outlined, you should cure your

The ssapi that comes with win xp is sapi 5.1 and not sapi 4.
Sapi 4 came with win 2k.

I'll send you a asapi repair tool off list that you can try. If
that doesn't work, you can try to reinstall sapi 5 from your xp
cd.

I am also having the speech recognition engine error and have
not been able to fix that yet but that should not impact your
being able to change the default tts voice.

I'm intersted to see wwhat solutions people come up with.

Cheers,

doris

Folks,

Here's a new one.

I can't change the default TTS Engine under control

I can preview the voices but when I hit apply it comes up

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\Program

I downloaded and ran SAPI4's suite from,

ownload.ht m

and it installed, "Microsoft Speech SDK 4.0 and engines
Microsoft Voice, Microsoft Dictation, and the Microsoft Speech

Convinced this would fix it.... It did not.

Furthermore when I launch the Speech Applet I get,

"Speech Properties

I've SP3 on the machine but had these problems with SP2 as
well. I was actually hoping there would be a Hot Fix in SP3
that would have > >fixed it.

Any suggestions?
