[access-uk] Boot up problem

When I first turn on this coputer, I hear the sound that you would expect to 
hear when a computer starts to boot up.  The problem is that I keep hearing 
beeps and the only way I can get around this is to hold in the power button 
until the machine switches off and start again.  I seem to have to go through 
this process several time before eventually, the computer boots up.  What is 
the problem and how can I fix it?
