Hi James. If you do that, you'll need to use a floppy disc and tell the program where the image is once it loads. The easiest if you're totally blind or need magnification is to use a dvd set.

Hi Ibrahim, Oh I know, I wouldn't have a problem with purchasing the DVD's if it was 100% necessary. But surely I can backup to an external drive, and then restore from that? Ibrahim Gucukoglu wrote: Hi James. Don't worry about booting from a floppy, I can assure you that this is not at all necessary since it can make a bootable disc. As for your mediashortage, you'll have to invest in more discs if you want to completely backup your system. The only other option would be to uninstall all nonessential programs, clear away junk and clutter from the drive and move allessential working files, music, video and other multimedia content to an external hard disc to reduce the size of your hard disc use. Image for windows backs up the partition and everything in it, so you could also create a new partition to move your stuff in to if you are familiar with a partitioning tool. All the best, Ibrahim.----- Original Message ----- From: "James Scholes" <james@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: "Mark Threadgold" <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, May 02, 2009 4:47 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Best Disk Imaging SolutionHi Mark, Thanks. I don't quite understand the point about booting from a floppy disk though. Surely there's solution which don't require you to do that? I don't have enough DVD's to backup my entire Windows instalation to is all. Mark Threadgold wrote: James, I have pasted below a message from john coley about this subject. I have got Image For Windows as suggested by John and can confirm his findings. Very easy to use and has worked well on all 3 of my hmachines using xp home, media centre and Vista home premium. --Original message-- Hi Everybody, a while ago there was a thread regarding accessible drive imaging. Someone suggested Image For Windows, made by Terabyte Unlimited. Ihave now had opportunity to put it through its paces, and can confirm thatnot only is it an excellent imaging utility, but totally screen reader friendly. You can either save the image to another drive, or, which is even easier from a blindness perspective direct to dvd. The advantage of burning to dvd are not in the creation of the backup, but the restoring, at which point there is no speech feedback. Another plus in burning the image to dvd is that saving the image to a drive or partition A: requires booting from a floppy, and many pc's now don't have them, and B: It would be impossible without sight to tell the program where the image is.In the case of DVD restoring only requires two keystrokes. It's also muchcheaper than other imaging programs, only 28 quid. The link to the image for windows page on the Terabyte Unlimited website is http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-windows.htm John. --End of Original message-- Hth, Mark Threadgold Of all the things I have ever lost, The one I miss most is my mind... -----Original Message----- From: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of James Scholes Sent: 02 May 2009 16:20 To: blindtech@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx; access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] Best Disk Imaging Solution Hi, I've just purchased a new computer, and after setting everything up the way I like it I would like to make a backup image of the hard drive, so in the event of a system crash or error or problem I don't have to do a full format, I can just restore the image. So, my question is, what, from your experiences are the best pieces of software to complete this task? I know there's Norton Ghost, but I'd rather avoid Norton if at all possible.
