Thanks George,

I'll do a bit more investigating, with some sighted help. I'm not very
good at taking things apart.

Hi Sharon,

All PC's have a battery of some kind to keep the CMOS alive when you
power it off. This is one reason why the clock keeps time, for example.

If it is indeed an actual battery, the chances are that it
will be one of those coin batteries, and will be located on
the motherboard of the PC. If you know someone who can
safely open up the case, they are usually fairly easy to
find and replace. There's also a good chance that you'll
get spares locally in a decent computer shop, or even
somewhere that replaces clock and watch batteries.

At worst, it could be what's called a "Supercap", and I'm afraid that
will probably require a technician to replace as they are usually
soldered in place.

Either which way, it should NOT be an expensive item to fix.

George.
