George - I have encountered this here in the UK, when at somebody else's
home, I can receive, but not send mail using their network, I've never
figured it out as it hasn't been an urgent issue, but would think a call to
the provider would help. In your associates case, can't they raise this with
the hotel?

  Hi Ed,

He?s using the hotel?s wireless facility. He can browse the internet and
talk on Skype, just not able to send mail, but odd that he can receive mail.

  Hi George,

This may be a silly question, but is the ISP your friend is using in the
Canaries BT Internet or is BT just the mail provider? If the ISP is
different, your friend should try using their SMTP settings. The mail will
still come from the BT address.

With dozens of btinternet users here, I?m hoping one of you might be able
to advise here.

An associate in the Canaries can receive e-mail, but is unable to send.

Both POP3 and SMTP servers, which work here OK in the UK, are set to
?mail.btinternet.com?.

Any suggestions as to where to begin looking?

  George.
