[access-uk] Re: Audio Description

Just to add something else to this thread, you don't need a freeview box or even a telly to get AD!

I've just bought a new Panasonic DVD recorder with a built-in hard drive and of course freeview. I discovered from speaking to Panasonic customer services that AD was available on this unit as well.

So with plenty of eyes about over Christmas, I got my sister to have a plough through the manual, and although it was a real bugger to find it, the directions for turning on AD where indeed present, and the unit is now working as hoped.

The lady on Panasonic customer services did tell me that so far as she new, AD was a common feature now in many of there DVD recorder and hard drive units. Thankfully they did understand what I was asking and did give the correct info over the phone.

So, if you wanted, you could have AD on Freeview without the need for a separate box or telly. This is only feasible of course if there are no sighted folks about wanting to watch! Obvious I know, but someone out there was bound to pull me up on this one! smile.

Hi

Can I just have this clarified to make myself 100% sure please?

If I buy a TV with either built-in freeview or an external box, and the TV is AD compatible, then I will be able to access audio description? I do not need to be connected to a Sky box to access AD if I have Freeview?

This is how I understand it.

This morning I went to Currys, thinking they would be able to help. I don't expect them to know everything about every TV they have, but I assumed they'd know what AD is given that they are a huge TV retailer.

I asked one of the assistants and he said he knew what I was after. He then disappeared and reappeared after a minute, saying he would have to go and ask "The big boss", So clearly he did not know what I was after.

The "Big boss", Arrived after about 10 minutes and proceeded
to tell me that to get audio description I had to contact the RNIB and download it from them and that was the only way to get AD. After that I knew it was going to be a long morning! I explained this wasn't the case and he seemed quite amazed that such a thing existed in TVs. He then said if I picked out some sets they would try them. I picked out an LG and a couple of Samsungs and he proceeded to open the box of a rather cheap Digitrex and spend 10 minutes reading the manual. Then he decided to try the LG. It did not have it. I then asked him to try the Samsungs and he proceeded to try another Digitrex. Clearly a make they are trying hard to shift. He eventually tried one of the Samsungs but it did not have it. I was about to ask him to try the remaining two when he told me I would not get it in Currys and he was sorry he couldn't help me. I interpreted this as go away. So I did.

He seemed clueless and unprepared to provide the assistance I expected off such a store.
