Let me see if I can help here - I think it's understood that not all TVs with built-in free view have AD, and not all external free view boxes have it either. In my experience, the place to look, is under configuration from within the menu screen. If you go for an external free view box, then it doesn't matter about the TV, the important thing is that the free view box has ad, so again, check the configuration menu, AD will probably be several screens below that configure menu, so, in pretty much all cases, I think sighted help is required to get set up. I have an Alba free view box, and once the AD was turned on for me, I can turn it on and off using a button on the remote. A good thing about this Alba box is that I can learn the menus, as pressing the menu button always seem to start me off at the same place. The unfortunate thing is however, that these Alba boxes--sold by Argos--seem to be no longer available, so could be hard to track down; these free view boxes were provided through the digital switch over help team, who provide the necessary equipment for blind people--and the elderly-- that enables one TV to work at the time of analogue switch off. I know somebody that has recently bought the TVONICS MDR240 from Comet for £39, which has AD, and works well. Other than the above, have found AD on free view boxes very hard to find. I have no actual expderience with it built-in to TV sets. Hope this helps in some way - Andy ----- Original Message ----- From: tony sweeney To: access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 2:38 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Audio Description Hi Barbara, I think you're right about Freeview! Now a question to ask maybe, can I acceess AD on any telly using Freeview using one of the menus on the remote? It would be good to get this point clarified! You for example may have to go in to 'language' or 'other' and so forth. If I buy a TV with either built-in freeview or an external box, and the TV is AD compatible, then I will be able to access audio description? I do not need to be connected to a Sky box to access AD if I have Freeview? This is how I understand it. This morning I went to Currys, thinking they would be able to help. I don't expect them to know everything about every TV they have, but I assumed they'd know what AD is given that they are a huge TV retailer. I asked one of the assistants and he said he knew what I was after. He then disappeared and reappeared after a minute, saying he would have to go and ask "The big boss", So clearly he did not know what I was after. The "Big boss", Arrived after about 10 minutes and proceeded to tell me that to get audio description I had to contact the RNIB and download it from them and that was the only way to get AD. After that I knew it was going to be a long morning! I explained this wasn't the case and he seemed quite amazed that such a thing existed in TVs. He then said if I picked out some sets they would try them. I picked out an LG and a couple of Samsungs and he proceeded to open the box of a rather cheap Digitrex and spend 10 minutes reading the manual. Then he decided to try the LG. It did not have it. I then asked him to try the Samsungs and he proceeded to try another Digitrex. Clearly a make they are trying hard to shift. He eventually tried one of the Samsungs but it did not have it. I was about to ask him to try the remaining two when he told me I would not get it in Currys and he was sorry he couldn't help me. I interpreted this as go away. So I did. He seemed clueless and unprepared to provide the assistance I expected off such a store.
