Well I may be in the minority here but I'm more concerned with content and lack of interference than I am with 'good' sound quality. OK the beeb could have given us lovely 192kbps Radio Four Longwave and FM, but I can't imagine that this would be much of a selling point. Sometimes this squeezing of is taken too far (Oneword on DAB sounds dreadful, and for some reason is even worse than Talk Sport which I think is also 64K). There is a strange background noise on Oneword which sounds like vinal surface crackle, not sure what's going on there.

David, the sound quality has to do with the bandwidth of the digital signal, i.e. the number of kilobits (or should that be kilobytes) per second transmitted. The bandwidth of most transmissions is, for anyone keen on good sound quality, unacceptably low - no DAB receiver, however good, can make a silk purse out of a pig's ear.

One advantage of DAB is that it provides a hiss-free, more stable signal in some areas where FM reception is poor.

Cheers,

Christopher

Sorry all to piggy back on this subject.

Is the sound quality a function of the decoding of the digital signal,
or is it a function of the following audio processing.
