Ah! .RAR files are not themselves playable music files.
They are compressed files which may indeed contain music
files, or for that matter, any other kind of file. They are
basically similar to files which have been zipped.

You will require something like Winzip to extract the files.
You can get a free evaluation version of Winzip from
http://www.winzip.com

The extension for the particular file I am trying to open
seems to be
RAR.
What does it mean? Will one of the MP3 programmes convert
it?

Mandy.

depends what the file types are. It may be a lot easier if
you go and=20
download the correct plug-ins for your Windows Media Player
that
correspond=20
to the file types you're trying to play.

On the web you can find entire suites of plug-ins that you
simply
install=20
with a click of a button.

These plug-ins will be seemlessly ingested by your Windows
Media Player
and,=20
from that point on, it will recognise the file types you
have installed
in=20
it.

I've installed divx and mp4 plug-ins in recent times.
