[access-uk] Re: Advent laptops: your thoughts, please?

Advent is the brand name of dsg group I think, who are or were Dixons group.
It's like the own brand make of laptop, and that could mean cheaper parts etc.
That said, I had an advent years ago, and had no problems, but the standards of
manufacture might have diminished since then.

Hi Chris

Although I haven't owned an Advent PC myself, my son bought one a couple of
years ago and it has spent more time being repaired than in actual use.
Firstly, after only 2 months, the motherboard died and had to be replaced.
Secondly, The efficiency of the fan gradually began to diminish until it, too,
died and was replaced. Thirdly, there was a problem with the module that
recharges the battery and this has been replaced 3 times so far. Judging by
this record, I wouldn't recommend Advent to anybody.

hth

Shane

Hello all,
This isn't for me, but my father is looking for a laptop to give to my sister
for Christmas. This is so she can do college work and perhaps a bit of online
activity. He saw an Advent Rumour 1500 laptop presumably on Amazon, and I'm
just wondering what your thoughts are on Advent laptops in general? As for me,
I don't like where they position keys like insert, delete, home, end, etc. As I
have never owned an Advent laptop I can only tell you what I saw in the shops.
My father's looking for the cheapest laptop possible. They all seem to have 3GB
onboard RAM, 500GB HDD and either Windows Vista or Windows 7, mainly Windows
Vista.
Thanks for your thoughts.
