I personally think it is very very good, and assuming you have installed a voice file, the menus will speak.

In addition to voicing the menu items, Rockbox will spell file or folder names, or there is a relatively complicated procedure to get it to speak these synthetically using words. However, the easiest way to voice file and folder names I found is to use the voice clips feature.
I have recorded my voice announcing the name of each artist and album title as these are folder names, and so when you arrow to a specific artist or album, the artist or album title will be automatically announced.

The best thing to do as a starting point is to visit my Blind iPod portal, at
www.hartgen.org/blindipod.html
which contains links to go directly to the installation instructions and the voice files on the Rockbox site.

Hi Brian -

I know the Rockbox firmware wasn't written with blind users in mind, but is it's interface fully accessible?

Hi

In reply to Andy's question, I feel I should be a little more precise.

In order to make the Rockbox software work, you need to "patch" the original iRiver firmware. There is a program on the Rockbox site to do this.

This means that you have a choice as to which firmware starts when you power up the iRiver, either Rockbox or the iRiver firmware.

I hope that answers your question.

Hi

No it does not overwrite it. Rockbox is alternative firmware, but the iRiver firmware is not overwritten. What this means is you can either use the Rockbox firmware, which is a completely different interface, or you can boot the machine up to use the iRiver conventional firmware.

Hi Brian and all -

If I understand it correctly, does the Rockbox firmware
overwrite the existing IRiver firmware? Does it make all of the IRiver's features accessible to the blind user?

The H340? They are about as common as fish and chips (smile). Lots of them available on the web, and in high street retailers as well.
