David,

I had thought of this to be honest, but I find that for every update the
tower needs a reboot, so far without fail. I check it each time as I do a
manual update daily as well. It is no great hardship to reboot it once a
day but rather the difference between the two machines puzzled me somewhat.

Hi,

AVG has different types of update, depending what it downloads. Some days it
does need to be rebooted for the new files to take effect, if it has
downloaded a new scanning engine or prompts. The old AVG will remain working
almost always, but be assured that the result is that you get the latest in
everything. Sometimes on your laptop you will find that the update runs and
you will need to restart, but as you boot up more often you won't notice it.

Cheers
Dave
