What I said was turn off system restore. When I did this the other week,
the drive was whirring for about 3 minutes because I had never done this
process since getting my machine back. Incidentally, I don't know what you
mean by an evaluation copy of spybot. It is a free program.

Carol. It might be worth you turning off system restore because it is
amazing how much of your computer's memory is taken up with this. you
might
be suprized how long it takes to clear out all of the system restore
points
which are created automatically several times dring the day. Remember
though not to forget to turn system restore back onn afterwards.

I am not sure why the slow boot and all will probably only be revealed
when I have a pair of useful eyes to tell me what's going on then. I have not set the scan to continue each time the machine is booted and don't know where to look in the system files to confirm/deny this.
People have suggested all of this spyware to me including Spybot. I'm
sorry if you can't really understand my problem here; I just don't feel confident in zapping all those files . . ..

As far as spyware is concerned, I run Spybot using the autorun file I found somewhere on the JFWLite page. So far I haven't had any problems
QUESTIONSand I have been running Spybot that way for months. Is the machine booting up slowly because it's doing some kind of in depth disc scan?

Well, my computer has been completely out for a few days and I've been
forced into some cleaning up of neglected areas!
I thought I'd let you know of some of my findings and of course there are a few more questions now.
First, for some while I had had a problem with Outlook which infuriated me. Every time I went to leave the programme, it came back
with an error that it could not close. I reported this to Microsoft who insisted they were finding a fix . . .. I just unchecked the box for Outlook so that it didn't start again and lived like that for weeks. I tried in vain to update my version of Outlook via the WEB and gave that up.
Well, knowing that I was having trouble with the co-existence of Norton and AVG, I elected first to remove AVG. This was because I couldn't remove Norton Internet as this has various modules and I still haven't got any details as to which should be removed first! Well, after removing AVG, I found that, once I'd turned off the plug-in support in Outlook, all errors went away and it's now running very nicely and fast, thank you!
Conclusion - I thought this was a Norton problem but, at the very least, it was a co-habiting problem between Norton and AVG and may in fact have been an AVG problem directly.
Now for the questions. I'm currently speeding up my machine which has
become very slow at boot-up. I have checked and fixed all errors cauased by last week's final crash and the computer is very stable once it's booted, but this does take ages. I am pretty sure it is not
error checking every time, so far as I can see. If this is possible in XP and I should be looking somewhere specific to check, please let me know as this could account for the slowness in boot-up.
Finally, I think I may have problems relating to spywear because I have never really got to grips with any of the software which has been
discussed. . . .. (Shame on me!) My problem has been the uncertainty of what to delete and what not to delete as it's really not obvious to me and I don't want to delete system files that really shouldn't go. I really would welcome some help therefore on this. Which good spywear programme will keep copies of anything I delete so that I can go back on any action I take? If anyone is able to help me
through this hurdle and give me some confidence by working through a programme on the phone, I'd be very grateful indeed. I think this is the only way I'll really get to grips with this "painful" side of the computer. Please write me personally if you feel able to help with this.
