Hi Donna

I've had a similar problem some time ago but with CD writing.

perhaps it may help if you could say what make of discs you are using. Some years ago when I bought my first writer I had trouble with a certain batch of disc.

The make is a little confusing though as many manufacturers don't actually make the disks they sell them under their own brand.

For example, some of the Panasonic range use the Taiyo Yuden dye as does some of the Ridisc, Datawrite, Rivision and Datasafe ranges.

It may simply be that your writer is not getting on with the type of disc you're using especially as other drives read them fine.

One make of disc that I have used for years and they still read fine is Verbatim.

These discs are a little expensive but if you can get one it's well worth a try. Or simply try another make with an alternative dye type. Be careful as mentioned above as it can be difficult to establish the dye type. Software that claims to identify this in my experience is unreliable at best.
I have several types of disc here, both DVD and CD so I may be able to help.

Get back if I can be of further help.

Just been surfing, and one guy on the net seems to have same problem. He used a lense cleaner and it got sorted.

Another guy used a lense cleaner but no joy. He talked about some sort of operating system conflict and deleting registry entries but wasn't any more specific and I'm not gonna mess about as this can be dangerous. May try the lense cleaner idea though and see if it works.

Hi Donna,

Bit of a head banger this one. I'll have to sleep on it.

George.

DVD problem

Well George, I'm using Nero to back up my mp3 files onto
dvd. This works fine and the dvds copy successfully. They
just have music mp3 files on.

But, when I try and play the dvds, the computer just keeps
telling me to insert a disk, even when there is one already
in there.

I took the dvds I had copied round to a friend's house. She
has a Pioneer 110D player, and they played beautifully on
there.

The computer recognises audio cds if I put them in the
drive, but not these dvds I have done myself containing
mp3s.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Donna,

Perhaps you'd better start by telling us all what software
you are using to record your DVDs.

Also, you do often need a special license to play many of
what you call "bought" DVDs.

George.

problem

It struck me that I didn't explain this very well before, so
hopefully this is better:

I have a Pioneer DVD/RW DVR-106D

I can read and play audio cds with this no problems.

It also recognises bought dvds, though I don't as yet know
how to play these on the computer.

But, if I use a blank DVDr, it will copy stuff onto it fine,
like MP3 or data files, but it won't read it. So once I've
copied the files, they won't play.

Is this a normal thing to expect, or do people think there's
something wrong with it?

And, incidentally, how do you play a bought dvd on the
computer?

Really hoping someone can satisfy my curiosity.

Donna
