Hi Iain It must be how the phone was set up by Nokia then as I realised I had to change the theme in order to achieve exactly what you described. Once I did that, I got what you confirmed, and was able to make my selections from the huge list of choices. I must admit I am very pleased with the C5. It is a very slim handset compared to my old one, and the buttons are really nice to text on. I would also say that the quality when speaking to someone on the handset is very clear, so this is good value me thinks. When I go into Shortcuts, The keys together with their functions are spoken. The order listed is Left Selection key, Right Selection key, Navigation Key Left, Navigation Key Right, Navigation Key Up, Navigation Key Down, Selection Key. I can also report that I have had no difficulty in changing the assignments for these keys. I haven't changed anything on the phone to achieve these results. I like to use my joystick for shortcuts on my phone such as Log, Bluetooth, Calendar, Contacts and Clock etc. These shortcuts are in addition to softkeys one and two, which can also be altered to suit the user's preference. When I go into Shortcuts on the C5, however, it says Shortcut 1, Shortcut 2, Shortcut 3, etc, with an assignment for each. But I don't know which part of the joystick these shortcuts are, and no matter what I assign any of the shortcuts to, when I come out and go back to the main screen, I discover that the joystick does something else. I have never seen this before, and wonder if there is an answer I haven't worked out, or if it just isn't possible to achieve this at all. Many thanks for your input.
