Thanks Andrew, I'll look into it further. It's something to be honest I've never needed to use on Vodafone, only with BT. But I have another friend who uses the free service on Voda, and he assures me it does work, so I'll call their Customer Services and ask. I seem to remember asking them a while ago, and they didn't know a thing about the free service, so I didn't follow it up at the time.
I don't know if I'm feeling older or just getting more cynical, but I feel we do more chasing up for our rights than ever these days (smile).

Hi Jackie,
I had to call Vodafone to arrange to have my number set up to work with 195. 
As far as I am aware it's free.  I haven't been charged so far.

To avoid getting conned, I ring the 195 number on my landline, quoting my
PIN as one does, then ring the number on my mobile if I have to go out and
need to do that. I've asked Vodafone about it, and they don't seem to know 
anything about 195 Free Directory Enquiries, so I just don't bother.  If I
were in a situation where I had to get a number on the mobile, I'd have to
investigate it further then. From what I've heard and been told by friends who use it on various networks, none of this Directory Enquiries business is 

clear-cut is it?

Phil, I'm on T-Mobile and, as yet, I don't think I'm being charged for
195 calls, but I shall look at my bills more carefully now.

In Touch's investigations have, in the main, centred on Virgin Mobile,
but maybe they'd be interested in people's experiences on other
networks.

I don't think this breach of 195 's free to use principle should be
tolerated. Mind you, I happen to think that paid-for directory
enquiries was one of the dafter bits of de-regulation in the late
80s-early 90s.

following on from In Touch this week has anyone else noticed that on
O2 we are now being charged 50P for Directory enquiries calls.  this
started about three weeks ago.  When I queried this in our local O2
shop they just said they were now charging for this service and that
was that as far as they are concerned.

some people may think we should be charged for this service via
mobiles but they have never charged before.

What do other people think about this and do other providers charge?
