[3ddesktop-dev] Re: very slow (hang) performance in nvidia 1.0-9746

Oh.. automatix is not usually a good idea. Just use the repositories
that are out there, and if you need something installed manually, you
should be doing it yourself. That way you know exactly what you did to
your system.
Automatix circumvents your package management system whenever it sees
fit, and can leave you with no way back to your original setup. It's
very handy when things work correctly. It's very windows-like (format
and reinstall anyone) when it doesn't work right.
My point with compiz/beryl is this: I have had versions of beryl &&
compiz before that were quite reliable. It's certainly not unattainable
to get a stable beryl setup (well, it depends a lot on your video
hardware). When I used to use 3ddesktop for essentially the exact same
effect, I was never afraid to upgrade to the newer version. 3ddesktop
was/is always quality software, even when it had a bug or two (were
there ever two at the same time? The more I think, I don't think that
every happened). Someday I'm sure that beryl be *consistently*
relatively stable, but that day is not now. Someday maybe you'll even be
able to figure out if beryl should be working by simply running
flipscreen 3d. Now *that* would be cool... oh wait, we used to have that

7.04 already installs the latest nvidia driver correctly. After initial
install, it pops up and notifies you that you should let it because
there are restricted drivers available. I can't remember if you need to
enable DRI or not, but that stuff is very easy. There are still bugs in
the latest nvidia driver that keep beryl from working correctly though.
There are work-arounds, but the nvidia driver seriously impairs beryl
performance at this point (not as much as using mesa only I suppose).
Nvidia has acknowledged the problem, and is planning on fixing it some
day.
