I'm using gnome2/sawfish and have defined hotkeys to the commands "3ddesk --gotoright" and "3ddesk --gotoleft", and I'm controlling animation speed, mode, etc. via the 3ddesktop.conf file. Obviously, I haven't enabled the dontexit flag. :)

I'm running XFree86 version 4.3.0.1 (Debian), with nvidia driver version 1.0-6629.
