I guess autoacquire isn't really off by default.

i needed to set a line ~/.3ddesktop/3ddesktop.conf to be "autoacquire 0"


now the lag is gone. I wish 3ddesktop's output would scale to the CPU load, like a little 320x240 window in the middle of the screen for when the CPU is going to prevent smooth switching. just something to think about. a low-cpu usage mode with say, the "slideshow" mode would be neat, and at smaller sizes on the screen wouldn't lag too badly at 100% cpu use.
