Going on a hunch, i recompiled Window Maker with the "--enable-gnome" 
switch, and viola!  3ddesktop now works with Window Maker alone.

Its still not perfect, i'd say about 20% of the time 3ddeskd crashes 
window maker durring the --acquire stage.  But, once its started, it 
runs pretty much perfectly.
