I've been able to use 3ddesk with Window Maker but only along with gnome.
I think when Window Maker runs with gnome, Window Maker integrates with
GNOME somehow to recognize the X messages WIN_WORKSPACE etc.

The correct behavior is *not* to run with that switch. It should detect
whether the sawfish only stuff can be used or not. It should not have
let you run. That needs fixin' :)

A bunch of folks want to use 3ddesktop with WindowMaker and
blackbox (+ others) without Gnome so I will make an effort to find out
how to switch desktops/workspaces through those window managers
when Gnome is not active.

The --sawfish flag just runs "sawfish-client" so a similar hack could
be used for Window Maker, blackbox etc. So if there is a command line
way to (1) get the current desktop/workspace, (2) set the current desktop/
workspace and (3) find the number of enabled desktops/workspaces then
your golden.
