A core dump would be useful if you can get one.  Try changing
the shell limits maybe:

  (tcsh)$ limit coredumpsize unlimited
  (bash)$ ulimit -c unlimited

Also run 3ddeskd in a writable directory. The crash happens
just about the time OpenGL is initialized.  Maybe it is some 
graphics problem or perhaps it is some bad interaction with 
fluxbox.  I'm not sure but I will try running with fluxbox
soon.
