[3ddesktop-dev] Re: 3ddesktop-dev Digest V6 #6

Hello 3ddesktop-users,

thanks for your kind reply, Jeff. I will try that out.

Meanwhile, I seem to have discovered the bad boy sucking too much cpu time, it seemed to be KDEs system guard, which monitors the cpu load and heat every 2 seconds. After quitting the SysGuard, everything is now fine again as it should be, happily flipping. :-) Even the mini-sysguard in the taskbar does not disturb 3ddesktops performance, while its been
updated every 4 seconds.

I really love KDE, but switching desktops with a little animation to close the gap does
me good all the way.

Thanks for your great program, Jeff! I really enjoy using it, please keep up the good work.

Greetings,

Andreas Sigg

Hello 3ddesktop-Users,

I'm using the prg after quite some time, and am not satisfied with what I'm getting.

Necessarily, that must not be the prgs fault, it also could be some system specifics.

I'm running OpenSUSE 10.2 version 2.6.18.8-0.3-default and using 3ddesktop in
KDE 3.5.5 rel. 45-4.

I've compiled 3ddesktop from source, version 0.2.9, which should be the latest, without problem, and its running without major problems, but the performance is limping. That makes me wonder, because I've used 3ddesktops on older computers
with older NVIDIA cards without such problems.

To give a little description of the performance, it is all well, but every second or third animation comes with a little pause placed randomly in the sequence, so it really spoils the fun, if you had already used desktop-3d without such a nuisance.

Can anybody think about an optimation, maybe a compiler option or a line in the
3ddesktop-conf file, which could probably make things better for me? Thanks
for hearing from you, anyway.

Greetings,

Andreas Sigg

I would try reducing your texture size. That will make 3ddesktop consume
a lot less memory, and probably run a lot faster. I found that I would
notice performance issues sometimes after an upgrade, and realized that
it's because my display resolution was so much higher each time, and
took a lot more video memory to store the snapshot.

I don't remember what exactly to set things to, but it's fairly well
documented in the example config.
