Deciphering Medspeak
http://www.mlanet.org/resources/medspeak/
Today's site, from the Medical Library Association, offers an
easy to read glossary of medical terms to help decode the often
unfamiliar vocabulary of the medical profession. Readers will
find this convenient guide a useful resource to understanding
medical descriptions.
"... [Y]ou have probably read a newspaper or magazine article,
tuned into a radio or television program, or searched the
Internet to find answers to health questions. If so, you have
probably encountered "medspeak," the specialized language of
health professionals. ... The Medical Library
Association has developed "Deciphering Medspeak" to help you
translate common "medspeak" terms. You'll also find some tips on
how to identify quality health care information on the Internet."
- from the website
The site has arranged its dictionary in comfortable-sized
alphabetical sections. Discover the difference between similar
sounding prefixes, such
as "broncho" and "brachio" and why "tachy" (with its hard "k"
sound) is not an insult. The site also includes a link to the
equally helpful glossary of pharmaceutical "shorthand" terms
which appear on prescriptions, as well as a brief list of
recommended medical information sites.
