Do You Speak American?
http://www.pbs.org/speak/
Today's site, the online companion to a recent program of the
American Public Broadcasting Service, offers both information and
entertainment on what's happening to English. Readers will
discover a lively and engaging site as they ponder the
peculiarities and pitfalls of English, American style.
"Spambot? Cybercat? Are we ruining the language? The experts
weigh in. ... Exactly how many varieties are there of American
English? No one knows for certain. ... Is TV making us sound
alike? Will cars sound like men or women? What's ahead for
American English?" - from the website
The site spotlights topics as diverse as neology and "slayer
slang". From articles pondering the decline of grammar to a
thoroughly enjoyable quiz, complete with audio input, where
participants match the speakers to a specific U.S. region, the
presentation examines the changing state of English and the
direction in which it is headed. The list of "Beastly
Mispronunciations" offers an annotated guide with an easy
pronunciation key, of some of the most frequently mangled words,
while essays and lists chart the inclusiveness of American speech.
