Doodles, Drafts & Designs - Industrial Drawings from the
Smithsonian
http://www.sil.si.edu/exhibitions/doodles/
Today's site features an exhibit from the U.S. Smithsonian
Institution, incorporating a range of specimens which illustrate
the creativity and practicality of American inventors. From silos
to shopping carts, readers will discover a diverse and
fascinating collection of drawings.
"Engineers, inventors, and designers produce drawings as part of
their creative process. ... This exhibition presents examples of
industrial drawings in the collections of the National Museum of
American History and the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. Some
are working drawings, ideas sketched in pencil or ink. Others are
more finished, designed for presentation. A few are printed,
either as sales material or as part of a patent application. They
visually document American industrial creativity, from inventor's
hand and investor's boardroom, to patent office, factory floor,
and manufacturer's showroom." - from the website
Beginning with an excellent introduction to the exhibit, the site
jumps into its theme with a look at the initial stages of design
inspiration in "Working It Out", with expandable images and
interesting commentary. Further sections explore later stages of
the design process in "Convincing" with polished representations
of various designs, while the "Controlling" section demonstrates
the detailed precision of the new era of standardization. The
"Recording" section offers a visual record of some of the
artifacts of the past -- the waterwheel, to those of today -- the
tupperware bowl. There's also an "Innovators Gallery" which
answers those little questions, like who invented Crayola
Crayons, designed the modern
bra and manufactured the first shopping cart.
