American Postcards: Motels
http://www.lileks.com/postcards/motels/index.html
"Nostalgia for old motels, like most forms of nostalgia, is
selective and dishonest. We like to imagine a pure world before
the soulless hotel chains took over, a landscape of lovely neon,
local charm, and individuality. ... Most of these motels hail
from . ... [the 50's and 60's when] the sign took on great
prominence; it was a way of establishing identity and rank even
when no other feature of the motel was unique. The sign didn't
just sell the place; it was the place. ... Most of these places
are gone or renamed. But we still have the cards." - from the
website
The site displays motel postcard collections from 37 states. View
motel postcards which beckoned the travelling public with the
tempting allure of "tile showers" and "ultra modern air
conditioned restaurants and cocktail lounges". Apart from the
inherent delights of these authentic postcards, Lileks' amusing
and wry comments make this a particularly engaging presentation.
