A presentation of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American
History, today's site examines the impact of polio on 20th
century America. Readers will discover a haunting exhibit of the
polio vaccine.

The four primary sections of the exhibit are subdivided into
modules which spotlight specific aspects of the topics and
virtually all include a
consideration of the personal consequences of the disease.
Primary source objects, such as the sign warning that "Children
under 16 not allowed to enter this town" (circa 1916) and moving
recollections of polio victims, convey the emotional reaction to
the disease. The science behind polio and the race to develop a
vaccine are also discussed, accompanied by informative graphics.
A useful timeline traces the path of polio during the 20th
century, while the historical photo section, with insightful
annotations, conveys the chilling effects of the disease.
