Google Zeitgeist

Google Zeitgeist http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html is
worth perusing now and then if you are interested in the types of
things people search the Internet for, or to see how current
events affect searches. You can find the most popular brand-name
searches, charts showing how searches peak for particular
keywords during news events or in response to TV shows (Iraq,
Election 200?, and so on), the most popular searches for
particular men, women, and fictional characters, the most popular
movie searches in Australia, the most popular brands in Italy,
and so on. If you've ever wanted to know what people are really
searching for online, this is a wealth of information.

There are other, similar tools.
Ask.com http://sp.ask.com/en/docs/iq/iq.shtml has a service that
shows you the top "advancing" search terms - the ones that are
growing most quickly.
Yahoo! Buzz http://buzz.yahoo.com/ can be interesting, too.
Last, but not least, the Lycos 50 http://50.lycos.com/ is
published weekly to predict what will be hot or not.
