Although many travelers participate in the airlines'
frequent-flyer programs, not as many take advantage of the major
hotel chains' frequent-stay clubs. You should add this angle to
your next online travel planning search. Even if you don't stay
in a hotel for more than the time span of your yearly vacation,
you may be able to realize significant savings by joining its
program.

Like the airlines' scheme, hotels allow you to accumulate points
for staying at a participating property, dining in the hotel's
restaurant, or using some other service. Although programs vary,
points can be exchanged for free room nights, discounted room
rates, special perks and privileges, and, in some cases,
frequent-flyer miles. And the price is right -- it's free. Unlike
the airlines, however, just joining a hotel club may make you
eligible for special discounted rates, entitle you to express
check-in and checkout privileges, and get you free breakfasts,
free local calls, or a free morning newspaper.

Here's a rundown of some frequent-stay programs that offer perks
even to not-so-frequent travelers:

*    Bass Hotel & Resorts Priority Club Worldwide
http://www.priorityclub.com covers the Inter-Continental Resorts,
the Crowne Plaza hotels and resorts, and all of Holiday Inn's
properties. Priority
Club members get express check-in privileges, access to
discounted rates at select hotels, and several free perks.
Freebies vary according to hotel, but often include free
breakfast, free local phone calls, and/or free parking.

*    Choice Hotels International Guest Privileges
http://www.guestprivileges.com covers Sleep, Quality, Comfort,
and Clarion properties. Participants receive a number of
excellent perks, including express check-in, access to special
rates, free room upgrades based on availability, free local
calls, complimentary newspapers, and extended checkout times.

*    Hyatt Hotel's Gold Passport http://www.goldpassport.com
bestows a host of privileges upon its members. Members have
access to a private reservation line and receive express
check-in, complimentary newspapers, and free access to a hotel's
fitness center. You also receive special offers and discounted
rates from select Hyatt properties.
